I had been looking for a backhoe for the last six months. Looked hard at a couple and was talked down off the ledge by my wife. Missed a lot of of them by not being the first caller.
When I saw the ad for this backhoe I called the seller, I was told someone was looking at it in an hour or two. When that person let it past, I was already headed that way.
The past owner was pretty upfront with me. Its an old backhoe he had bought planning on fixing it up to use 20 years ago. He had bought new tires all the way around in 2014 and that matches the date on the tires. Were the tire hits the road still has the embossed date proving the backhoe hasn't moved on those tires. He told me about the fuel tank and how it had a goo in the bottom that he couldn't et out. He had strapped a boat fuel tank to the hood and it was feeding the injector. The return line was still to the real fuel tank. That goo in the tank turned into the most awful goo I had ever seen. He had rebuilt the fuel injector pump and gave me the tickets from the machine shop were he had the head redone. I am sure the injector pump needed the rebuild due to the goo. When starting the backhoe, it fired right up from a cold engine. I had a little bit of white smoke when it started.
This is were it gets funny. He started telling me everything on the backhoe needs to be fixed. Most of the cylinders leak. He had done the boom swing cylinders and gave me most of seals to fix the rest that were leaking. This included the steering seals that were leaking. The brakes do not work but is pretty normal on these old machines. The wiring was patched and spliced...I even found an old coil cord from a phone. It needs hyd fluid and the oil pan has a hell of a dent in it.
I bought it, $6500.
