I now own a Case 580C
Getting a 14k pound machine home.
Getting the hoe home presented a very large problem. The Case had to travel over 100 miles home. Top speed of an old Case is 25 MPH, without brakes, driving it wasn't going to work.
I hit up a couple of sites to find a carrier. The guy I found cut me a great deal. It was on a return leg from a of hauling containers. He swung by to get it very late. The seller drove it up on trailer and it was at this point I realized I have not driven it yet. Driving a backhoe without brakes is easy if you understand the you can stop the backhoe by lowering the loader and you have a lot of space. You can also shift the shuttle forward and reverse to control it. The load was really scary. The ride home was in the dark and without issues. We choose the flattest area to unload. I felt bad for the driver when we tried to start it and it wouldn't start. Its was 2:00am and he had to work in the morning. After seeing it start right up, I thought I had been screwed. Then I realized, the tank feeding the 580 was out of fuel. I got so lucky that this even started right up without having to crack fuel line to get it running.
The first time I got to drive the 580 was driving it off the trailer. The trailer was a deck over the tires meaning that it was a very high deck. The steering was all over the place and the brakes had nothing. As the rear wheels crossed on to the ramps I thought to myself well this is it, it coming off one way or the other. Oh the fun. I drove it down to the house in the dark thinking of all the work this 580C is going to help with.
